Kennel Pads

Kennel PadsKennel pads, also known as crate pads, mats, or cushions, are used to make a dog crate or kennel more comfortable for your pet. There are a variety of products available, all dependent on the size, material, and cushioning needed. Many are thinly-cushioned beds that come in sizes common for pet carriers, or crates. These typically have a synthetic wool bolster around the edge, with a thinner cushion along the bottom. But your choices aren’t just limited to the simple and utilitarian!

There are a range of pillow-like beds that are also commonly used as kennel pads. These come in a very wide variety of sizes, fabrics, and qualities. They can be furry or flannel, overstuffed or firm, cedar-chip stuffed or filled with poly foam. This type especially is commonly seen outside a kennel, and is often used as an indoor pet bed. There are also thinner fleece-like pads that have heating pads built in, that can keep your beloved pet toasty on chilly nights. These are also great for older pets, and can help those with arthritis and other joint problems.

How do you know which kennel pad is right for you and your pet? There are several things to consider before picking a kennel pad out. Will it be used in a crate or kennel? If so, then you are directly limited by the size of the enclosure. From there, you are free to pick the filling and material to be used. If it is going to be used very frequently, it would be best to get something that can handle frequent washings, check the tag for washing instructions. The easier it is to wash, the more likely it will be kept clean for your family friend. As for filling, there is either solid foam (usually less padding) or poly foam, which is the more pillow-like beds.

Solid foam can be thin and inexpensive, or you can even spend extra on medical-grade orthopedic foam for a pooch with arthritis or back/hip problems. If the pad is to go into a carrier/crate and won’t be the dog’s primary bed, then a regular thin foam pad would probably do. Now, as far as the fabric covering the bed, most are synthetic and machine washable. You can get fluffy, plush and decorative fabrics…but chances are if you are picking out a kennel pad to be used in a crate/kennel, that wouldn’t be what you’re looking for. If you think you’ll need to wash the pad frequently, then make sure the cover itself zips off easily for easy cleaning. Don’t forget, your dog’s comfort is depending on your decision, so if you don’t find just the right kennel pad, keep looking!
